Maki-e, (Japanese: sprinkled picture), refers to the decorative technique by which pictures, abstract patterns or words are drawn with lacquer and the design is further enhanced by sprinkling or spraying wet lacquer mixed with metallic powder from a dusting tube, sprinkler canister (makizutsu), or hair-tipped paint brush (kebo). In some instances, real gold powder is used in the paint, further adding to the luxurious feel and depth of the artwork.
