Erica Arborea, also known as briar wood, is a type of hard wood that is commonly used for making fountain pens. And was once also a popular material used to make smoking pipes. However, due to the difficulty in obtaining the raw materials, Platinum has decided to discontinue their 3776 Briar series.

The 3776 Briar fountain pens are made with wood from Briarwood shrubs that are between 25 - 100 years. Each pen is handcrafted in Japan and has a unique pattern and color.

The pen series included three versions:

1. Light Briar
2. Dark Briar
3. Sandblasted Briar (subjected to a period of sandblasting to remove its soft part, leaving behind the hard part of the wood)

The Platinum #3776 is a timeless model, one that is oftentimes many's first introduction to 14k gold nibs. First produced in 1978, it's name is derived from the Mt. Fuji, Japan's highest peak. Platinum spent over 5 years designing this pen so that it fits in your hands perfectly. The cap features a slip and seal mechanism, which keeps the ink from drying out, even after being left unused for a year.

In comparison to other brands, Platinum's 14k gold nib is slightly larger at the shoulders, and offers a unique combination of firmness and responsiveness. It gives you some tactile feedback, and almost feels like you're writing with a pencil! Platinum has continued to make new and exciting versions of the #3776, with various materials and techniques today.
